R290 (propane) heat pumps are winning shelf space across Europe and beyond, and for good reason: a Global Warming Potential of just 3, high flow temperatures, and strong cold-climate performance. But if you distribute, import, or install heat pumps, "R290" also raises a fair question from your own customers and your compliance team: *propane is flammable — is it safe to sell?*

The short answer is yes, when the product is engineered and handled correctly. The longer answer is what actually protects your business. This article walks through how R290 units are made safe by design, and then turns that into a practical checklist for the decisions you make before a container leaves the factory.

Why R290 is flammable — and why that isn't the whole story


R290 is propane. It is classified as an A3 refrigerant, meaning higher flammability. That classification is real and it drives every safety rule below — pretending otherwise helps no one.

What matters commercially is that flammability is a *managed* property, not an uncontrolled hazard. Propane only ignites within a specific concentration range in air and only in the presence of an ignition source. A well-designed monobloc heat pump is built so that neither condition is met in normal operation, and so that a rare leak is managed safely rather than allowed to accumulate.

This is the same logic behind millions of propane appliances already in homes — gas cooktops, patio heaters, LPG boilers. R290 split systems also exist and have their place where indoor-unit placement is required; because refrigerant lines run into the building, they carry stricter installation and compliance requirements for A3 refrigerants. **Ignition-source management inside the enclosure.** Electrical components that could spark are sealed, relocated, or rated so they cannot ignite a leaked charge. This is a core part of the unit's certification testing.

**Sealed, robust refrigerant circuit.** Brazed joints, quality heat exchangers, and vibration-resistant construction reduce the chance of a leak developing over the unit's life in the first place.

The certifications that actually protect your import


Safety design is only half the story. What lets you clear customs, satisfy insurers, and win installer trust is documentation. Before you commit to an order, confirm the specific certificates that apply to *your* target market — and confirm they cover the exact models and refrigerant, not just the company name.

Commonly relevant for R290 units by region:

- **Europe:** CE marking, and depending on the country and application, PED (pressure equipment), the relevant EN safety standards for A3 refrigerant appliances, ErP / energy labelling, and schemes such as Heat Pump KEYMARK, MCS (UK), or BAFA/BEG eligibility (Germany).

- **UK specifically:** MCS certification is often important for installer-led projects and grant-related eligibility checks.

- **Australia / NZ:** RCM, GEMS, and where applicable relevant gas/electrical safety approvals.

Certification requirements change by product type, capacity, application, and target country, so distributors should verify the current requirements before each import program.

Two practical rules. First, certification should be verified **by model**, not by brand. Second, ask for the certificate **number** and the issuing body, then verify it yourself on that body's official register — this is far more reliable than a scanned certificate, which can be copied or altered. It should be planned before the shipment reaches the port.

Before you import, confirm with your supplier and freight forwarder:

- How units are packaged and declared for sea freight, and what documentation ships with them.

- Any charge-related thresholds that affect classification or paperwork.

- Storage requirements at your warehouse (ventilation, ignition-source separation) once units arrive.

3. **Leak safety** — Does the unit include leak detection and safe shutdown/venting?

4. **Certification by model** — Do you have the actual certificate documents covering *your* market and *these* models?

5. **Test reports** — Can the manufacturer supply the underlying safety test reports, not just the certificate?

6. **Transport** — Is dangerous-goods packaging, declaration, and documentation agreed with supplier and forwarder?

7. **Warehouse handling** — Do you know the storage and ventilation requirements on arrival?

If a supplier can answer all eight clearly and back them with paper, you're dealing with a manufacturer who understands that your risk doesn't end when the container ships — it ends when the unit runs safely at your customer's site for years.

Before placing an R290 heat pump order, ask the manufacturer for a document pack that is specific to the models you plan to import. At minimum, this should include:

- Declaration of Conformity or equivalent market documentation

- Model-specific certificates and test reports

- R290 refrigerant charge amount and nameplate details
